NXNE:June 13-19th: Kanae's Artist Picks: Monokino

Another indulgence that you can look forward to by attending NXNE is the opportunity to take in music from different continents, especially from that indie pop/rock pioneer, Europe. Like Denmark's the Black Light White blazing the trail before them, Toronto will be welcoming another European band that you should keep your eyes on: Monokino.

The Amsterdam-based pop band has earned great recognition from Holland, Germany, and China. The trio has signed up with the largest Chinese independent record company, Modern Sky. At last, they finally put together a North American Tour this month, and will dropping by Toronto during NXNE. Their playful synth-pop tunes with high-pitched voice are their trademark. They set apart themselves from the rest of popular genre with distinctively danceable hooks reverberate in your head, which set adrift an influence of 80's electro and contemporary music. You would probably have a better idea of what I am talking about by listening to the below tune, "Something Strange".

Monokino - Someone Strange (remix by Seed A.I.) by Monokino

Monokino will be performing on June 17th at Rancho Relaxo at 10 p.m., on June 18th at Now Lounge at 12 a.m., and on June 19th at the Garrison at 9p.m

Here is another song by the trio called " New Kid"!

NXNE:June 13-19th: Kanae's Artist Pick:The Driftwood Singers

Let's continue with Kanae's Artist Pick, as NXNE is just around the corner.

Not all of us can party every night and sleep in until noon the next day during the NXNE. If you are looking for something more calming and chilling to listen to, rather than standing on your feet and making noise for long hours at a time, then it would be best to check out some venues like 'The Central' or Gladstone Hotel Ballroom with a glass of wine in your hands. There is one band in particular that I recommend for you to check out: The Driftwood Singers.

This California Folk duo crafts dedicated harmonies with a vibe reminiscent of the Carter family. The heart-warming tracks from their latest album, "Look",(You can stream the album via Bandcamp), mirror their strong 50s-60s bluegrass influence and the simplicity of the beauty from those eras.

The Driftwood Singers will perform at the Central on June 17th, at 9 p.m.

Here is the video of their tune, called " Coco Ellis". Enjoy, and don't forget to stay tuned with all the coverage of NXNE. I have some surprises for you coming up soon next week.
